Other Information : This Is also known as Massfort and is in the Roman Catholic parish of Upper Mourne and civil parish of Kilkeel It is at a cross-roads a mile and a half from the centre of Kilkeel on the Newry road Mass was celebrated at the site during penal times and building of a church was started in 1811, to be completed In 1818 It was replaced by the present much larger church during the 1870's The baptismal and marriage registers date from 1839 but the oldest stone records a death in 1810 Before this date and even into the present century many Catholics were buried in Old Kilkeel Graveyard The graveyard extends widely on all sides of the church, the older stones being in the sections nearest the building There is an exceptionally large number of rough granite stones which can only be read during a few hours each morning Two stones lying flat proved impossible to read but most of the granite stones are recorded, though with many doubtful dates All grave stones prior to 1865 have been recorded and memorial tablets in the church up to 1900.
