A study of folklore in the Ordnance Survey Memoirs for Co. Londonderry
by Christine Hamill
The graveyards and the churches of County Londonderry are the focus of this study. A dark task, you might think, yet the potentially lugubrious business of gleaning history from headstones and graveyards and church histories has yielded a wealth of colourful stories, from the magical to the macabre. For this is a place where magician and holy man live cheek by jowl, a place of wonder and trepidation where a church spire can be brought low by the dying breath of a witch, where an entire congregation needs protecting from the wolves that roam the land, and where the sacred properties of a well are guarded over by an earless dog.
